(Pierre, SD) — Under-18 weddings are still able to go on in South Dakota. Current law allows 16- and 17-year-olds to get married as long as they have permission from a parent or guardian. The House State Affairs Committee voted 8-to-5 to reject House Bill 1154 on Monday that would’ve changed eligibility to 18 and older. According to the state Office of Vital Records, 81 percent of minors entering into marriage were minor girls being wed to adult men.
