Next Round Of New Men’s Prison Funding On Governor’s Desk

(Pierre, SD) — Governor Kristi Noem is expected to approve the next round of funding for South Dakota’s new men’s prison facility. The State House passed Senate Bill 49 on Thursday that now just needs Noem to sign off on. More than two-hundred-25 million in taxpayer dollars is going to be pulled from state government’s two reserve accounts into the state’s incarceration construction fund. That will be added on to the more than 330 million that lawmakers transferred last year for the project. The new prison facility has been proposed in northern Lincoln County in efforts to replace the aging State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls, but ongoing litigation still lingers over the location.
