(Custer, SD) — South Dakota Senators Mike Rounds and John Thune are working on a proposal that would increase timber harvesting in the Black Hills. It’s a move to better manage the forest and reduce fire risk. Rounds says the Biden administration has done everything it can to restrict timber harvesting. The senators also want to have a reasonable timber industry that can be assured of a particular amount of timber or wood sales throughout South Dakota’s western forests. They say if nothing is done, timber companies are going to be run out of business, take away jobs, and put the burden on taxpayers to thin out the forests.
