(Rapid City, SD) — It’s been 52 years since one of America’s deadliest floods happened in Rapid City. Locals took part in Greenway Days over the weekend to honor the lives lost in the flood back on June 9th in 1972. Rapid Creek was overwhelmed by heavy rain and caused Canyon Lake Dam on Rapid City’s west side to burst. Nearly 240 people died in the flood that also caused millions of dollars in damage. The space along Rapid Creek has since been developed into a greenway after the city banned commercial and housing developments on the banks. Yesterday, Friends of Rapid City Parks hosted a memorial 5K, creek cleanup and disc golf tournament to wrap up the weekend’s Greenway Days.
