DOC Contests Claims Of More Unrest At SD State Penitentiary

news

(Sioux Falls, SD) — There are reports of more unrest at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. According to Department of Corrections staff and also inmates and their families, fires were set to mattresses Tuesday night and intentional flooding was done in East Hall. A DOC spokesperson is contesting the claims in a statement, saying the reported flooding was only a plumbing issue and that the “DOC is under no obligation to provide security-sensitive information” in regard to the fires. Now, a new group is being formed in hopes to create transparency and change within the state’s prisons. The first meeting is set for September 19th at the Downtown Sioux Falls Library to address these recent concerns.
