(Pierre, SD) — The 2025 State of the Tribes address is driving a message of unity. Tribal leaders gathered for the meeting at the State House Chambers in Pierre yesterday. Sisseton Wahpeton Chairman J. Garrett Renville carried out the address, saying right now is the time for change. Chairman Renville noted the relationship between the tribes and the state has been rocky under Governor Noem. But the State of the Tribes address acknowledged there’s a golden opportunity ahead as Senate Majority Leader John Thune and likely Noem take on major roles in D.C. This could open up more communication with the Department of Justice and the Tribal Relations Committee to try and bridge the gap between the state and the nine tribes.
