(Mandan, ND) — Construction crews are breaking ground for a correctional facility in Mandan. The 166-million-dollar project will be the first prison designed specifically for women built from the ground up in North Dakota. The Heart River Correctional Center will support rehabilitation, reentry, and family reconnection. It will also have a nursery program to allow incarcerated mothers to stay with their newborns for up to 18 months. Construction is projected to finish by fall 2027.
