ND Legislature Passes Higher Speed Limits Bill

(BISMARCK, ND) — North Dakota interstate highways will soon have an increased speed limit, pending a signature from Governor Kelly Armstrong.

The North Dakota Legislature has approved increasing the speed limit on the state’s interstate highways from 75-mph to 80mph this week. The House, after initially voting against increasing the maximum interstate speed limit, reconsidered and passed the bill on Thursday evening by a vote of 54 to 36. On Friday, the Senate passed the legislation by a vote of 27 to 20.

The measure also includes some higher speeding fines and alters driver’s license point penalties. Bismarck Republican Senator John Dwyer opposed the speed limit increase. He told the Senate he believes that even at 80, people will drive faster than the speed limit.

The bill now goes to the Governor for his signature.
