Authorities Warning Of Synthetic Opioid Carfentanil

(Sioux Falls, SD) — The DEA and local law enforcement are warning about the rise of carfentanil, a synthetic opioid even deadlier than fentanyl. Overdose deaths linked to the drug are surging across the U.S. Carfentanil is often mixed with other drugs and can be fatal in tiny amounts equivalent to the size of a grain of salt. While it’s not widespread in South Dakota yet, there have been cases, including one overdose death in Minnehaha County. Sheriff Mike Milstead emphasizes that prevention and awareness are crucial. Treatment for carfentanil overdoses is difficult, and officials say law enforcement, treatment centers, and the public must work together to combat the crisis. Attorney General Marty Jackley is also involved in addressing the threat.
