SD Voters Fight Against Amendment L

(Pierre, SD) — Some South Dakotans are raising concerns about Amendment L, which will be on the 2026 ballot. If it passes, the amendment would require future constitutional changes to get a 60-percent majority, up from the current 50 percent, or simple majority. The Voter Defense Association of South Dakota argues this could limit voters’ rights. VDA President Matthew Schweich says it’s a question of whether every South Dakotan’s vote should count equally. Supporters say Amendment L is needed to address big money in South Dakota elections, but Schweich disagrees, warning it could actually benefit out-of-state interests. This isn’t the first time a proposal like this has come up in South Dakota, but past attempts have failed.
