(Sioux Falls, SD) — A bat found at the Great Plains Zoo is positive for rabies. The South Dakota Department of Health says the bat was near the pollinator garden and farm on May 9th and quickly removed by zoo staff. No guests are believed to have had contact with it. Zoo animals and staff are vaccinated, so there’s no concern among them. Health officials remind the public that rabies is fatal but preventable. If anyone may have come into contact with the bat, they are urged to contact the South Dakota Department of Health and also talk with a doctor.
