(Williston, ND) — The city of Williston’s Chief of Police is announcing an early retirement. Chief David Peterson and city officials mutually agreed to part ways, effective last Saturday. Peterson served for nearly 17 years and said he is confident the department will continue its commitment to the community. Peterson received the Early Retirement Incentive. Captain Steve Gutknecht will continue serving as the interim Chief of Police, who has been since December 2024.
