Gianforte: Montana Prepared For Wildfire Season

(Helena, MT) — Montana is “well-prepared” for the Treasure State’s wildfire season. That’s what Governor Greg Gianforte said Tuesday while recognizing May as Wildfire Preparedness Month, saying “increased funding and innovative technology” is helping the state stay ready. Gianforte touted how the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation has kept 95 percent of wildfires under its direct protection to ten acres or less. The governor asked Montanans to do their part by limiting the risks of starting wildfires.

Meantime, the first wildland fire of the season at Yellowstone National Park is being confirmed. Park officials say hikers spotted the minor blaze in the northwest portion of the park on Memorial Day. The flames, which started because of lightning, torched less than an acre and were brought under control quickly by firefighters. The park said despite the blaze, there are no restrictions in place and fire risk remains low.
