Debate Grows After ICE Arrest at Minnehaha County Courthouse

(Sioux Falls, SD) — Minnehaha County’s State’s Attorney says ICE agents acted appropriately when they arrested a man at the county courthouse last month. The incident happened on May 30th. According to Daniel Haggar, the arrest was legal because Minnehaha County isn’t a sanctuary, and arrests happen regularly in the courthouse lobby. But the county’s public defender says the arrest disrupted a trial and hurt the defendant’s right to a fair process. Both sides agree the man had a valid removal order, but concerns remain about how this might affect future cooperation from immigrant communities.
