(Pierre, SD) — A 19-year-old from Pierre is making a surprising run for South Dakota Governor. Robert Arnold is a student at Dakota State and just finished a legislative internship. Now, he’s jumping into the race for the state’s top job. If he gets the signatures to qualify, Arnold could become the youngest governor candidate in U.S. history, and the first Native American Governor in South Dakota. He faces long odds but says he’s running as a commonsense, pro-community Democrat against GOP candidates Jon Hansen and Toby Doeden. Arnold says he’s focused on affordable housing, safer communities, and fixing property taxes. Former Sioux Falls mayor Rick Knobe says if Arnold sticks to the issues, he’s got a shot.
