(Minneapolis, MN) — The suspect in the killing of a Minnesota state lawmaker and seriously wounding another early Saturday is now in police custody after a manhunt that lasted nearly two days. Vance Boelter [[ bowl-ter ]] was captured alive about 50 miles southwest of Minneapolis after being spotted on a trail yesterday by a camera. The man is accused of killing former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband. He’s also accused of shooting Democratic Senator John Hoffman and his wife, who are recovering. South Dakota leaders spoke out about the shootings over the weekend. Governor Larry Rhoden ordered flags at half-staff Saturday in honor of Representative Hortman. He says South Dakota stands with Minnesota and calls the violence heartbreaking and unacceptable. Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken and Senator John Thune also shared their condolences, saying political violence has no place in our country. Boelter is facing multiple charges, including two counts of murder and two for attempted murder.
