(Mitchell, SD) — Mitchell city leaders are weighing a big decision about upgrading the Corn Palace. And they say donors could make or break it. City Council President Kevin McCardle says major donors are showing interest in a proposed 19-million-dollar expansion that would double seating and nearly triple event space. But not everyone’s on board. Council member Mike Bathke says it’s too expensive, and the Corn Palace already loses money. He supports doing basic maintenance instead, like a six- to seven-million-dollar upgrade to heating and cooling systems. A final plan could land on the council’s agenda in July, and if it moves forward, some expect the public to push for a vote.
