Standoff in Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.D. — A standoff in Jamestown on Wednesday lasted 11 hours and involved a 2-year-old child, prompting a lockdown at Western Park Village.

Police were called to the home around 2 a.m. after a woman reported being threatened by 30-year-old Jacob Schmitt, who was allegedly under the influence of drugs. Four people, including two children, were safely removed — but Schmitt barricaded himself inside with the toddler.

Authorities believed Schmitt might have had access to firearms. The James Valley Special Operations Team entered the home just before 1 p.m. and rescued the child unharmed.

Schmitt is charged with terrorizing, and more charges may follow. Police say they’ve responded to the residence multiple times in the past.
