Canton Rebuilding One Year After Devastating Floods

(Canton, SD) — Canton continues to rebuild one year after flash floods slammed southeast South Dakota. Last June’s heavy rains turned creeks into raging rivers and cut off access to the town, leaving streets, homes, and public buildings under water. The courthouse and library took damage, but quick action and some lessons from past floods helped save the library’s collection. Emergency crews tackled the initial cleanup fast, but some repairs are still underway. A stretch of 274th Street north of town remains closed due to road damage. Lincoln County Emergency Manager Harold Timmerman says total damage topped 11 million dollars. Still, residents say they’re bouncing back.
