(Minot, ND) — The Minot Fire Department will have to hire additional firefighters without grant assistance. The city council voted against using the SAFER Grant to hire six more firefighters for the department. City leaders weren’t aware that Minot would have to pay 25-percent of hiring costs for the first two years and 65-percent in the third year. Council members opposed to the grant said the city cannot afford additional spending it can avoid, but recognize the department needs additional labor. The Minot Fire Department says it will still consider adding more firefighters soon without grant assistance.
