(Pierre, SD) — A former South Dakota state worker is heading to prison for stealing nearly one-point-eight million dollars over 13 years. A judge has sentenced Lonna Carroll to 13 years, one for every year she stole from the Department of Social Services where she worked in child protection. Prosecutors say she deposited state checks, then withdrew the cash for herself, doing it more than 200 times. Attorney General Marty Jackley says the case proves public trust isn’t for sale, and his office will keep going after those who abuse it. Carroll must also repay the full amount taken, though her lawyer admits she likely never will. An appeal is expected.
