(Vermillion, SD) — A chemical spill scare forces an evacuation at the University of South Dakota. Vermillion Fire EMS says crews responded quickly Tuesday afternoon after a hazardous materials incident was reported at USD’s Churchill-Haines Lab. According to officials, a faculty member was working on a chemistry experiment when a small gas leak happened. With help from the Sioux Falls Hazmat Unit, the area was secured and ventilated. No one was hurt, and officials confirm there’s no ongoing threat. Control of the building has been returned to USD, but the building will stay closed until 8 p.m. tonight as a precaution.
