(Sioux Falls, SD) — Check-washing scams are on the rise, and a Sioux Falls credit union is sounding the alarm. Levo Credit Union says thieves are stealing checks from mailboxes, altering the amounts, and cashing them. Branch manager Mitch Eichhorn says they’ve already seen three check-washing cases this summer, and the trend is growing. He warns not to leave checks in the mailbox, especially overnight. Use secure drop boxes, pay online, and consider writing checks with gel pens to prevent tampering.
