(Williston, ND) — Two North Dakota tribes are requesting that a ruling be delayed regarding a subdivision change. The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and Spirit Lake Nation sued the state in 2021 after officials created a subdivision in Belcourt. The tribes argued that the change to district lines minimized their representation and voting power. This led to a U.S. District Court judge ordering state lawmakers to eliminate the subdivision, a decision the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed in May. Both tribes now request that the circuit court delay its final ruling while they prepare for a potential hearing with the U.S. Supreme Court.
