(Bismarck, ND) — The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation will receive millions to relieve crowded prisons. Officials determined that male prisons were overcrowded by an average of 193 inmates between July 2023 and May 2025. This led to the state legislature approving 37 million dollars earlier this year for immediate prison overcrowding relief. The funding will be used to build temporary shelters, contract space from other jails, and build a new reentry facility in the state’s northwest region. The facility is expected to open sometime next summer or fall while officials work to procure the temporary shelters.
