(Pierre, SD) — A new energy project in northeastern South Dakota gets the go-ahead and could change how ethanol is made. The state Public Utilities Commission approved a special electricity rate for Otter Tail Power to support POET Biorefining’s plant in Big Stone City and its new partner, Antora. The plant will use thermal battery tech to create steam for ethanol production. PUC Commissioner Kristie Fiegen calls it a “game changer” as POET shifts from a failed CO2 pipeline plan to improving its carbon score another way. Otter Tail is still seeking approval from regulators in North Dakota and Minnesota.
