Pierre College Student Launches Bid for South Dakota Governor

(Pierre, SD) — A college student is looking to shake things up in South Dakota politics. Robert Arnold of Pierre just celebrated his 20th birthday, and he’s already running for governor in 2026. The Dakota State University student and Oglala Sioux Tribe member says it’s time for new ideas and believes his youth gives him the energy and perspective to lead. Arnold, a Democrat, would just meet the age requirement of 21 by election time and has already worked at the Capitol as a legislative page and intern. He says he’s focused on everyday issues like property taxes and cost of living and adds voters should look at who truly represents their interests — not just who’s next in line. Arnold will face a primary next June and says he’s confident he can win it. Republicans Toby Doeden, Jon Hansen, and Dusty Johnson are also in the race, along with independent Terry Gleason.
