(Sioux Falls, SD) — A federal jury in Sioux Falls rules in favor of a state prison inmate who says poor nutrition behind bars harmed his health. Mark Christians claimed he lost nearly a hundred pounds in 2017 and 2018, partly during a hunger strike after his complaints about prison food were ignored. The jury found two prison wardens liable, ordering Warden Darin Young to pay over 100 thousand dollars in damages, and Warden Brent Fluke to pay just one dollar. Christians’ attorneys argued the state showed deliberate indifference to his health. The case isn’t completely over yet, with post-trial briefs expected in the coming months.
