Sioux Falls Mayor Proposes 2026 Budget With Cuts, No Job Losses

(Sioux Falls, SD) — Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken says the 2026 budget is one of the toughest he’s faced during his tenure. He’s now rolled out a 776-million-dollar budget proposal for 2026, calling it a recalibration in response to rising costs and falling tax revenues. The city must cut eight-to-ten million dollars from its general fund over the next three years. TenHaken urges residents to contact legislators over the impact of Senate Bill 216, which will be limiting property tax revenue. The plan still includes major investments in public safety, housing, and infrastructure, with no cuts to jobs or wages. TenHaken is also calling on state lawmakers to help if a new prison is built in the area. The city council will vote on the budget in September.
