Former NCAA Champ Payton Otterdahl Earns Another Bid to World Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Former North Dakota State NCAA champion thrower Payton Otterdahl earned another trip to the World Athletics Championships as a member of Team USA on Sunday.

Otterdahl took second place in the shot put at the USATF Outdoor Championships on Sunday afternoon at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The top three finishers in the event automatically qualified for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, on Sept. 13.

Otterdahl threw a season-best 73-4 (22.35m) on his final attempt to jump from fourth place to second, securing the silver medal and his spot on Team USA.

Otterdahl, 29, now stands at No. 4 in the world this year for the shot put.

Otterdahl competed for NDSU from 2015-19, setting the collegiate indoor shot put record and winning NCAA indoor titles in the shot put and weight throw in 2019. A two-time Olympian, Otterdahl placed fourth in the shot put at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
