(Sturgis, SD) — The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is underway as thousands of bikers arrived in the city over the weekend for the 85th annual rally, with Sturgis officials projecting over 700-thousand guests will attend.

The rally did record its first traffic fatality over the weekend. A motorcycle traveling westbound on US 16A Saturday morning was unable to negotiate a curve, tipped over and slid into the eastbound lanes. The bike collided with 3 eastbound motorcycles. The westbound rider, a 58-year-old male, suffered fatal injuries. The eastbound riders suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are urging attendees to be safe on the roads and avoid drinking and driving. The rally runs through August 10th.
