(Pine Ridge, SD) — One local nonprofit is taking action to fight opioid overdoses on the Pine Ridge Reservation and across South Dakota. Emily’s Hope is now placing free naloxone kits — also known as Narcan — in public spaces like Buche Foods and the Oglala Sioux Tribe building. Founder Angela Kennecke started the mission after losing her daughter Emily to fentanyl poisoning. She says Native communities face some of the highest overdose rates in the state, and these lifesaving kits are urgently needed. So far, Emily’s Hope has distributed over 15-thousand naloxone doses statewide, including in grocery stores, libraries, and now several tribal communities.
