(Undated) — Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is using a Coast Guard jet to fly home to South Dakota. The Washington Post reports she’s made the trip nine times since taking office in January, which is about once a month. While some lawmakers are criticizing the use of a federal aircraft for personal travel, DHS officials say it’s allowed under federal rules. Noem reimburses the department the cost of a commercial ticket each time, which adds up to tens of thousands of dollars so far. DHS says the Secretary is required to use government planes for secure communications and rapid travel, and that the rule allowing it dates back to 2004.
