South Dakota Farmers Hit with $4 Million Judgment for False Crop Claims

(Pierre, SD) — Two South Dakota farmers are being ordered to pay more than four-million dollars for crop insurance fraud. James and Levi Garrett of Sully County claimed they planted crops in 2018 and 2019 that never went into the ground, collecting over one-point-three million in wrongful payments. A federal judge handed down the civil judgment this week, following their earlier criminal convictions from 2022 for the same scheme.
