(Canton, SD) — A second day of testimony is complete in the case of a deadly shooting in Tea that’s bringing South Dakota’s “stand your ground” law into focus. Sixty-one-year-old Timothy Overton is charged with murdering Isaiah Morales last June, but his attorneys argue it was self-defense. The judge ruled Thursday morning that prosecutors with the state now carry the burden of proof after the defense presented its case. Witnesses, including Morales’s sister and Overton’s ex-wife, testified about what led up to the shooting, describing a heated confrontation and a troubled history of violence from Overton. Testimony wrapped up Thursday afternoon, and attorneys will file written arguments by October 3rd.
