(Martin, SD) — A new hospital is on the way for Martin in rural southwest South Dakota. Bennett County Hospital leaders broke ground Friday on a 19-million-dollar project to replace their aging 1958 facility. Local leaders say it’s a lifesaving investment, since the nearest hospitals are 90 minutes away in either direction. The new building will feature 14 private rooms, an updated ER, and expanded therapy and lab space. Funding for the project came from federal loans, state grants, local fundraising, and even a five-million-dollar anonymous donation. Demolition work starts next week, with the new facility set to serve the community for decades to come.
