(Pierre, SD) — South Dakota is seeing new cases of bird flu. The USDA reports more than 100-thousand turkeys in Faulk and Beadle Counties have been infected, with two more flocks also impacted but not yet listed on the federal site. State Veterinarian Dr. Beth Thompson says the virus is showing up a little earlier this year, possibly due to heavy rains and harvest activity stirring up wild birds. Farmers are being urged to step up biosecurity measures. While a vaccine could be on the way, officials stress that poultry products remain safe to eat.
