(Sioux Falls, SD) — South Dakota lawmakers are considering a 650-million-dollar plan for a new men’s prison in Sioux Falls, a scaled-down version of the previously rejected 825-million-dollar project. The prison would have one-thousand-188 cell beds and 300 dorm beds, with dayrooms giving each inmate 40 square feet — just above the required minimum. The design features three T-shaped units for general population and restrictive housing, plus one dorm building, cutting overall square footage by about 160-thousand compared to the earlier plan. Governor Rhoden has shared an FAQ on the proposal ahead of the September 23rd special legislative session, explaining the changes in housing, dayroom space, and cost.
