Senate To Consider $650 Million Prison Bill First Pending Committee Approval In Special Session

(Pierre, SD) — South Dakota lawmakers are gearing up for a big decision next Tuesday as they meet in special session to consider building a new men’s prison in northeast Sioux Falls. The 650-million-dollar project would include nearly 15-hundred beds and a more efficient “T-shaped” design aimed at saving money and space. Lieutenant Governor Tony Venhuizen says the plan even includes a dorm-style unit to cut costs further. If the bill clears committee, the Senate will take it up first before the House, and it’ll need two-thirds support in both chambers to pass.
