(Pierre, SD) — Republicans will have at least two choices for South Dakota secretary of state next year. State Representative Heather Baxter of Rapid City announced Monday she’s running against incumbent Monae Johnson, who’s seeking a second term. Baxter says she wants to bring “fresh leadership” to elections, with a focus on accessibility, accountability, and security. A Democrat, Terrence Davis of Sioux Falls, is also expected to join the race in 2026.
