(Undated) — The USDA reports South Dakota has lost more than 400-thousand turkeys to bird flu in the past month. The outbreak hit eight commercial flocks and one backyard flock across five East River counties, including Beadle, McPherson, Jerauld, Spink, and Faulk. Neighboring North Dakota and Minnesota also reported losses, but South Dakota saw the biggest impact. Officials say while the number sounds high, the U.S. poultry industry remains strong, able to process more than 218 million turkeys annually. The highly pathogenic avian influenza tends to spike in fall and spring as wild birds migrate.
