Mitchell Balances 2026 Budget By Redirecting Lake Debt Funds

(Mitchell, SD) — The Mitchell City Council has balanced a pending proposed 2026 budget of nearly 83-million-dollars by redirecting money from a debt service tied to Lake Mitchell. Officials say they redirected over 929-thousand-dollars from a one-point-two-million-dollar debt service payment tied to a State Revolving Fund loan. The decision covered deficits for projects like 150-thousand-dollars for shoreline improvement and a million-dollar five-hole short course at Lakeview Golf Course. Council member John Doescher urged using only part of the funds and reviewing projects individually, but the council approved the reallocations during its October 6th work session. Officials will vote for the final approval for the proposed budget at the November 17th public hearing, with changes possible between now and that date.
