(Williston, ND) — The Williston Police Department is warning residents and businesses about a phone scam involving caller ID spoofing. A local business says that it received a call from what appeared to be a legitimate financial institution attempting to verify a large payment. However, the business recognized the suspicious nature of the call and immediately contacted the police before sensitive information was shared. Investigators say the scammer used a phone app to disguise their phone number and make the caller ID seem legitimate. Anyone who receives a similar call is advised to hang up immediately and contact their bank or the Williston Police Department directly.
