(Undated) — North Dakota’s leading energy source is still coal as renewable energy is now the worldwide leader. Independent energy think tank, Ember, found that 34-percent of all the world’s power comes from renewable energy sources. However, North Dakota has used less coal over the past 25 years, moving from 85-percent to 34-percent of the states energy. Basin Electric Power Cooperative, North Dakota’s energy utility, said it wants to use every source of energy it can to keep the state running. It will build wind farms and natural gas units but doesn’t plan on getting rid of coal anytime soon.
