(Piedmont, SD) — Residents of Piedmont say they were shocked to find out about a limestone mining project set to be built in their city. People say they didn’t know the project by Simon Contractors had been approved until after reading about it in the newspaper. The French-owned company got the go-ahead from the state and from private landowners to allow limestone mining on ten parcels of land, with plans to start running in August through the year 2043. At a city meeting last week, residents shared concerns about the mine causing impact on air, water, traffic and property values.
