PIERRE, S.D. – Libraries across South Dakota will celebrate the joy of reading this November as the South Dakota State Library launches Storytime South Dakota, a statewide initiative promoting early literacy and family engagement.
Participating libraries will host special storytime events featuring the 2024-25 Prairie Bud award-winning book Lou: A Children’s Picture Book About a Fire Hydrant and Unlikely Neighborhood Hero by Breanna Carzoo, a playful and empowering picture book that encourages children to discover their self-worth. Each event will highlight the value of reading aloud and the role of libraries in supporting young readers.
“Reading is a fundamental skill,” said State Librarian George Seamon. “It is important that parents foster the love of reading in children at birth and continue to support that skill in their children throughout adulthood. Local libraries are a great resource for parents in developing and supporting reading among our youth.”
According to Seamon, reading to children not only cultivates a love of books at a young age, but also strengthens literacy skills that help children become confident, capable readers.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to contact their local library for details about Storytime South Dakota events in their community.
