(Mandan, ND) — North Dakota’s first women’s prison is taking shape. The Heart River Correctional Center broke ground in April 2025 in Mandan. The new prison will include mental health and medical units, education and job-training areas, and transitional housing for women getting ready to reenter society. Other features include a new overnight visitation unit that will allow children to stay with their mothers in a supervised, home-like environment, and a nursery program for qualifying mothers to live with their newborns. The facility is expected to open in October of 2027 and will hold 304 inmates.
