(Bismarck, ND) — North Dakota Game and Fish is monitoring sick and dead birds for avian influenza after a rise in reports from the public. The department’s wildlife veterinarian, Doctor Logan Weyand, confirmed that a highly pathogenic avian influenza is likely the cause of a rise in sick and dead birds this fall. Most of the reported birds have been snow geese or other waterfowl. The first case was reported back in April. The disease risk to humans and pets is low, but can still occur. People are encouraged to have limited contact with dead birds and wear disposable gloves if removing carcasses.
