statewide task force is urging South Dakota lawmakers to strengthen open-meeting laws.

PIERRE, S.D. — A statewide task force is urging South Dakota lawmakers to strengthen open-meeting laws.

The group of local officials and media representatives voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend clearer, more detailed public agendas. Their proposal would require meeting notices to fully describe the items a public body plans to discuss or act on.

They also want public boards to cite the specific state law when going into executive session and to record that reason in the minutes. The task force is further recommending state agencies post agendas on the boards and commissions website at least 72 hours in advance.

Attorney General Marty Jackley convened the task force but didn’t take part in the debate. Lawmakers will consider the proposals when the 2026 legislative session opens January 13.
