A.I. Data Centers in South Dakota hot topic at Growth Summit

SIOUX FALLS — Energy leaders from across South Dakota gathered Wednesday for the Growth Summit 2025, hosted by the Sioux Metro Growth Alliance.

Hundreds packed the Sanford Barn to discuss power generation, renewable energy, and the growing role of artificial intelligence and data centers in the state’s future.

Organizers say the summit brings together business and industry leaders to focus on key growth issues. This year’s spotlight was energy, following past summits on housing and water.

Data centers drew significant attention, with speakers noting South Dakota’s cold climate makes it attractive for cooling large computer systems. Supporters say the facilities could boost property tax revenue and bring high-quality jobs.

Still, concerns remain over water use and energy costs. Developers say modern data centers can use closed-loop cooling systems that significantly reduce water consumption.

Organizers say conversations like these will help guide how the state plans for future growth.
